Gruden has spent the last three years as the Bengals' offensive coordinator. He worked with his brother, Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden, in the mid 2000s in Tampa Bay, when the franchise won a Super Bowl.

Current Redskins general manager Bruce Allen also worked with the Buccaneers then.

Terms of the contract have not yet been disclosed, but Gruden was the biggest name in this year's coaching search, and Redskins owner Dan Snyder made Gruden a good enough offer that he was willing to cancel his interviews with the Vikings and Lions.

Gruden made his name in the Arena Football League, winning four titles as a quarterback.

CBS Sports reported Thursday morning that he will keep Washington defensive coordinator Jim Haslett on staff in the same position. It's likely that cornerbacks coach Raheem Morris will also stay -- the two worked together in Tampa.

Gruden is noted for his work with young quarterbacks, although his pupil in Cincinnati, Andy Dalton, had a rough outing in a playoff loss to San Diego on Sunday.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was on vacation Thursday, and said he would not participate in the coaching search process.
