More than 100 representatives of advocacy groups on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues from throughout the United States and other nations will meet in Garden City starting Thursday to discuss common challenges and opportunities in their work for equality.
The three-day conference is a yearly summit of CenterLink, an international advocacy coalition based in Fort Lauderdale.
The event will put the spotlight on Long Island advocacy that has led to the recent opening of a third community center in the East End and the establishment of the Long Island Gay Parent Teacher Student Association last year, said David Kilmnick, chief executive of the Long Island GLBT Services Network, which is hosting the summit at The Center at Garden City.
“We are bringing people and showcasing the work that is done in suburban communities, which I think needs to be a focus for the movement,” Kilmnick said Wednesday.
He said community resources are often developed “for big cities” while many younger LGBT people remain “more isolated and need better access to the services that centers provide.”
