Agreements on Hempstead shelter, camp

The Hempstead Town board unanimously approved an agreement for an animal enrichment consultant for the town animal shelter and awarded contracts to two companies to construct the Malone-Mulhall Recreation Center at Camp ANCHOR.

The board voted at its meeting Tuesday to approve a six-month agreement to hire Laura Garber, of Hoboken, N.J.-based Woofgang, LLC, as an animal enrichment consultant to the animal shelter. The contract will expire on Aug. 21 with an option to renew for another six months, documents show.

Garber will be required to visit the shelter regularly and will be paid $75 per hour — not to exceed $40,000 in total compensation, documents show. She will provide animal enrichment services including dog evaluations, animal behavior modification, staff training and coordination with rescue groups.

The board also awarded contracts to Stalco Construction, Inc. and LEB Electric LTD for construction of the recreation center at Camp ANCHOR, a recreational summer camp in Lido Beach for the mentally and physically handicapped.

The name of the $6-million facility honors three counselors from Floral Park — Paige Malone, 19; her sister, Jamie Malone, 22; and Michael Mulhall, 22 — who died in July 2010 after their car crashed into a tree off the Meadowbrook State Parkway in Roosevelt.

Stalco Construction, based in Islandia, won the construction contract over 10 other contractors with its bid of $4.24 million. The highest bid was from Universal Construction, based in Great Neck, for $5.23 million, documents show.

LEB Electric, based in Copiague, beat out 11 other bidders for electric work on the project with its lower bid of $279,000. The highest bid was from Farmingdale-based Wire to Water, for $578,000, documents show.
