This time, there's a warning.

From Monday through Wednesday next week, don't be surprised to see F-16s and other jets streaking across the skies of New York City, the Air Force announced in an e-mail alert Wednesday.

There's nothing wrong - no one straying off course or, worse, flying with evil intent.

It's just the kickoff of Air Force week at which the U.S. Aerial Demonstration Team, aka the Thunderbirds, will be flying over the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in Manhattan.

There's little doubt that last April's unannounced flight of Air Force One and an accompanying F-16 over Manhattan for a photo shoot served as a lesson learned. That flight frightened many New Yorkers and led to the resignation of the White House military office director.

"Whether it's in Peoria or New York City, the Air Force has an obligation to inform the citizens of aerial events happening over their heads," said the Air Force's New York spokesman Maj. David Small.

According to the alert, two F-16s will be making practice runs from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, and the full six-member Thunderbirds team will be flying over the Intrepid, at West 46th Street and 12th Avenue, after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing will be flying an HH-60 Pavehawk onto the Intrepid at 11 a.m. and then depart at 4 p.m., the notice said.
