Albany should repeal union seniority law

If the teachers union wants what is best for our children, it must change its mindset and eliminate bad teachers ["Judgment day for teachers?" Editorial, April 10].
I see no reason why the union will not support the repeal of the "last in, first out" law for laying off teachers. A repeal would satisfy the union's basic claim to provide the best education for our children. The current LIFO law allows teachers who are unqualified, incompetent or incapable of performing to keep their jobs, even though better teachers are available.
If the teachers union does not support a change to LIFO, then the union's message to parents is a glaring example of hypocrisy and self-service.
Let's hope that the governor and State Assembly take a strong stand for changing LIFO, lest they risk looking as though the teachers unions are pulling the strings in Albany.
