Federal prosecutors in Manhattan on Friday charged an alleged Gambino family associate with a notorious 23-year-old hit on an informant that reportedly was the last killing ordered by boss John Gotti before he was imprisoned on racketeering charges.

Prosecutors charged Daniel Fama, 48, of Staten Island, with being part of a crew run by one-time Gotti deputy Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano that was ordered to execute Edward Garofalo, a contractor believed to be an informant.

Garofalo was shot and killed in front of his Brooklyn home on Aug. 8, 1990. Gravano became a mob legend by later turning on Gotti and providing testimony that led to his downfall.

Fama pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.
