'Amazedness' kite fly set for third run

The third annual Amazedness Kite Fly, a fundraiser and concert that benefits the American Cancer Society, is scheduled for Sept. 17 at Smith Point Park Pavilion.

Participants will be able to purchase kites to decorate as “soaring memorials” for loved ones who were lost to cancer or are battling cancer, organizers said. People are also welcome to bring their own kites, organizers said.

The event was founded by Jennett Meriden Russell, a Coram-based journalist whose brother, Dana, was diagnosed with brain cancer and died in 2000. “Amazedness” was a name Dana used in his email correspondence, Russell said.

The fundraiser will allow people to “tell cancer to go fly a kite,” Russell said. The event, which will begin at noon, includes a recommended donation of $5. Live music — including local artists Jay Scott and Silent Generosity — will be performed until 6 p.m., organizers said. Kite-flying will take place until 4 p.m., organizers said.

The kite fly has a rain date of Sept. 18.
