Repairs at storm-damaged Amityville Village Beach could start as early as March, Mayor Peter Imbert said, but should be finished by late June, when the beach is scheduled to open.

Tropical Storm Irene wrecked the piers bordering the bathing area. Fences, buildings, a parking lot and a floating dock were also damaged.

Most of the estimated $600,000 cost will be covered by a $500,000 grant secured by State Sen. Owen Johnson (R-West Babylon) that the mayor said was crucial. “Without this money, we wouldn’t be able to open the beach,” Imbert said.

Insurance and reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover the balance, Imbert said.
