Another sport, another title match between St. Anthony's and Chaminade

Getting tired of CHSAA finals between St. Anthony’s and Chaminade?

Too bad.

The two rivals will go head-to-head in a championship match in a seventh varsity sport this season on Monday, when they square off in the CHSAA tennis final at Hofstra.

St. Anthony’s, the No. 1 seed led by defending CHSAA singles champion John D'Alessandro, went undefeated in league play and knocked off No. 4 Kellenberg in a semifinal Friday to return to the title match.

Chaminade, the No. 2 seed and defending league champion, beat St. John the Baptist in Friday’s semifinal.

In two meetings during the regular season, St. Anthony’s beat Chaminade 5-2 on April 10 and 4-3 on April 16. Last year’s final between these two teams came down to a thrilling match at third doubles that ultimately went Chaminade’s way in a 4-3 victory.

The championship rivalry was refueled this past fall.

In football, Zane Wasp hit a go-ahead field goal with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give Chaminade a 17-16 lead, and Dan Fowler blocked St. Anthony’s field goal attempt in the final seconds to seal the title for the Flyers. In soccer, it took a goal by Chaminade’s Kyle Walsh in the final minute to force overtime and Hnuter Frey's final penalty to give the Flyers the 4-2 edge on penalties to win the title.

In the winter, St. Anthony’s swept Chaminade in a best-of-three series to win the hockey championship, using overtime in Game 2 to clinch the title. In wrestling, the two schools were first and second at the CHSAA state championships, with Chaminade coming out on top 226-219.5. That, however, avenged St. Anthony’s league title, won by a 341.5-330 margin.

In cross country, St. Anthony’s beat Chaminade for its second consecutive league title, but in winter indoor track Chaminade had the edge, a 29-28 victory in the final.

If recent history is any indication, Monday’s tennis battle should be another one for the record books.
