He lobbed the goalkeeper in the 64th minute and then set up striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting two minutes later. The thrilling draw was the first game at the Qatar World Cup in which both teams gave up a lead. But the result suited neither. Either Brazil or Switzerland qualify with a win when they meet later Monday in the second round of group play. Defender Strahinja Pavlovic, midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for Serbia. SOC—WCUP-CAMEL-RIDES
MESAIEED, Qatar - As Qatar welcomes more than a million fans for the monthlong World Cup, even its camels are working overtime. An influx of visitors the tiny emirate has never before seen is rushing to check off a bucket-list of quintessential Gulf tourist experiences: ride on a camel’s back, take a photograph with a falcon and wander through the cobbled alleys of old markets. On a recent Friday afternoon, hundreds of visitors in soccer uniforms or draped in flags waited for their turn to mount the humpbacked animals. By Lujain Jo and Suman Naishadham. DOHA, Qatar - Tourists in Qatar are being met with relaxed rules about what to wear at some public beaches. The question of what attire would be permitted for women at the small Gulf Arab nation’s beaches was widely discussed before the Middle East’s first World Cup kicked off. By Suman Naidshadham. UPCOMING: 500 words, photos, text by 1800 GMT.
SOC—WCUP-CANELO-MESSI-FEUD
DOHA, Qatar - It’s Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez in one corner and Lionel Messi in the other. The Argentina star may have gotten into trouble with the wrong type of person after moving the Mexican national team jersey with his foot while celebrating his team’s much-needed World Cup win against Mexico on Saturday. The Mexican world champion boxer said on Twitter that Messi “was cleaning the floor” with the Mexican shirt. Canelo said it was a disrespectful attitude by Messi toward the Mexicans. He said. Messi “better ask God not to run into me.” SENT: 237 words, photos.
SOC—WCUP-GERMANY-COMMENTATOR
DOHA, Qatar - Former Germany forward Sandro Wagner is under fire for a disparaging remark he made about Qatari men’s traditional attire while commentating on Germany and Spain’s World Cup game. Wagner said he thought one end of the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor was full of German fans. He told German broadcaster ZDF, “Only then did I realize that they are the Qatari bathrobes.” Wagner was referring to the thaub, the traditional white full-length robes with long sleeves worn by many men in the region. SENT: 200 words, photos.
SOC—WCUP-GERMANY-FULLKRUG
DOHA, Qatar - Niclas Füllkrug was scoring goals in Germany’s second division one year ago. Now he’s scoring at the World Cup. Füllkrug’s late goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Germany against Spain on Sunday. Last year he scored in his Werder Bremen team’s 2-1 loss at Holstein Kiel in the second division. It’s been a remarkable rise for the 29-year-old Füllkrug. He now has two goals for Germany in three appearances since his debut less than two weeks ago in a World Cup warmup against Oman. Füllkrug says “this goal from me will do little for us if we don’t survive the group phase.” By Ciaran Fahey. SENT: 500 words, photos.
SOC—WCUP-IRAN-US PREVIEW
DOHA, Qatar - The task is clear for the United States: beat Iran in a politically charged match or go home. U.S. players have been praised as the best generation of American soccer yet finished third behind Canada and Mexico in World Cup qualifying. A draw or a loss would eliminate the Americans, who tied Wales 1-1 and England 0-0. The English lead the group with four points, followed by Iran with three, the U.S. with two and the Welsh with one. Iran famously beat the U.S. 2-1 in a 1998 World Cup match in France that eliminated the Americans. By Ronald Blum. SENT: 500 words, photos.
SOC—WCUP-ENGLAND-WALES PREVIEW
DOHA, Qatar - If England needs added motivation in its final World Cup group game against Wales a video from 2016 should do the job. Footage of Wales players celebrating wildly as their UK neighbor crashed out of the European Championship with a loss to Iceland went viral at the time. England was humiliated. Wales was jubilant and went on to reach the semifinals. England only needs a point against Wales to guarantee qualification to the knockout stages. Depending on goal difference, England could still progress even if it loses that match. Wales must win to have any chance of reaching the round of 16 at its first World Cup since 1958. By James Robson. SENT: 500 words, photos.
SOC—WCUP-ECUADOR-SENEGAL PREVIEW
DOHA, Qatar - Enner Valencia has scored Ecuador’s last six World Cup goals so there’s no understating how worried his country is after he was stretchered off in his last game. Ecuador hopes that the 33-year-old striker’s troublesome knees are OK for a decisive final group match against Senegal on Tuesday. Ecuador’s captain has three goals in two games in Qatar and is clearly key to its chances of reaching the knockout stage for only the second time. He scored three in three games in Ecuador’s last World Cup appearance in 2014 but that wasn’t enough to advance in Brazil. By Gerald Imray. SENT: 500 words, photos.
SOC—WCUP-NETHERLANDS-QATAR PREVIEW
DOHA, Qatar - The Netherlands is on the verge of reaching the knockout stage at the World Cup and an overwhelming favorite in its final Group A match against host nation Qatar. If the Dutch advance it will put more focus on 71-year-old coach Louis van Gaal, who stepped out of retirement just over a year ago to take over the national team while being treated for aggressive prostate cancer. The Netherlands has reached the World Cup final three times — and lost each time. That was in 1974, 1978, and 2010. It also lost in in the semifinals in 2014 in a shootout against Argentina.
