Asharoken Village Justice Charles Brown died earlier this week, after about 30 years of service in the elected position. Associate Justice Murray Schwartz will be appointed to Brown’s position at the next board of trustees meeting, Mayor Gregory Letica said.

Schwartz will become acting justice if approved by the board at its meeting on Aug. 6, Letica said. He said someone else will be selected to fill Schwartz’s appointed position.

On Wednesday during village court, Schwartz asked for a moment of silence for Brown, who died on Monday. Schwartz described Brown as a “dear friend, mentor and brilliant jurist.”

Brown was 83. His four-year term expires on July 1, 2014. No details were provided on his death.
