Around Lindenhurst

On Oct. 22, Fireman’s Memorial Park in Lindenhurst was buzzing with softball players from early in the morning until late at night during the ninth annual Patrick Boylan Memorial Softball Tournament. 
 The tournament is held in honor Patrick Boylan, a Lindenhurst resident and New York City firefighter who died in 2002 of cardiac arrest during surgery. 
 Boylan served in FDNY Ladder Co. 7, which had nine firefighters killed in the 9/11 attacks. Boylan’s friend and tournament creator, Bob Weiden, said Boylan “always put others’ needs ahead of his own.” 
 “It’s wonderful to come together and celebrate his memory every year,” he added. 
 The first tournament was held for the Boylan family to celebrate Patrick’s life. It was such a success that it became an annual event. The number of teams participating increases every year, as well as those attending just to show their support, Weiden said. 
 Boylan’s family members attend every year, including his parents, who come up from Florida. 
 This year’s event included the sale of tournament T-shirts, raffle drawings and food sold and donated by Duffy’s Wings of Lindenhurst. More than $3,000 was raised, which will go to several local families in need.

 Safe Halloween: Today, Lindenhurst High School will host its 21st annual Safe Halloween program from 4 to 7 p.m. Children can stroll down the high school’s Halloween-decorated hallways and trick or treat from classroom to classroom, where various school clubs will be handing out candy. Other holiday activities will also be taking place. The high school is located at 300 Charles St. 
 Hope For The Warriors Run: On Nov. 13, Hope for the Warriors is holding its fourth annual Long Island Run for the Warriors, which includes a 10K, 5K and 1-mile run/walk starting from Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. There will be a pre-race ceremony at 9 a.m., with the race kicking off at 9:30 a.m. Register for the race <a href="http://run.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=483243">here</a>. 
 Studio Theatre: A performance of Neil Simon’s “Jake’s Women,” the story of a writer struggling to save his marriage and career, is playing at Studio Theatre, 141 S. Wellwood Ave., through Nov. 12. Around Lindenhurst: Softball raises $3G

Reading has its rewards, as 43 students from Harding Avenue Elementary School recently learned. 
 On Oct. 13, the group was given free lunch at Sorto’s Top Bun Burger for participating in state Sen. Owen H. Johnson’s summer reading program, in which students read three or more books over summer vacation and wrote summaries of each. Johnson presented all of the students with a certificate recognizing their efforts. 
 Also on hand for the lunch were Lindenhurst Superintendent of Schools Richard Nathan, Assistant Superintendent Robert Tymann, Assistant to the Superintendent Louis Aiello, Harding Avenue Elementary Principal Richard Chamberlin and reading specialist Maria Bohrer. 
 The event was coordinated by Bohrer. 
 Next up for the district is homecoming this weekend. The festivities will kick off with a pep rally for middle school students at Lindenhurst Middle School on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and then a pep rally for the high school at 7 p.m., also at the middle school. The school sports teams will be on hand, along with the marching band, dance team and cheer squad. 
 Homecoming events will continue on Saturday with a parade at noon. Beginning at Fireman’s Memorial Park, the parade will make its way down Wellwood Avenue, ending at the middle school field. At 2 p.m., the varsity football team will take on Sachem East. 
 OTHER LINDENHURST EVENTS: 
 Harvest Moon Gala: The Babylon Citizen Council on the Arts is holding its 4th annual Harvest Moon Gala on Oct. 27. The event will take place at the Chateau La Mer at 845 S. Wellwood Ave., from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be live entertainment, as well as a ceremony to honor BACCA treasurer Jim McGarrity. Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased by calling the BACCA office at 631-587-3696. 
 Halloween Parties: Three Lindenhurst organizations are celebrating Halloween with parties on Oct. 29. 
 The Lindenhurst Fire Department’s Chemical &amp; Salvage Co. No. 2’s event will be at 8 p.m. at the Fireman’s Park Pavilion on Heiling Boulevard. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Call 631-957-7533 to purchase tickets.

Around Lindenhurst: Reading rewards, homecoming

The Town of Babylon and the Babylon Citizen Council on the Arts will be hosting the 31st annual Paumanauke Pow Wow on Aug. 13 and 14. 
This festival seeks to preserve Native American heritage on Long Island and give the public an opportunity to learn about the culture, including arts and crafts, music, and food. 
Speakers will talk about the Native American way of life. There will also be a dance competition with three groups: 8 and under, 9-16, and 17 and older. 
The festival is at the Babylon Town Hall Park, 200 E. Sunrise Hwy., Lindenhurst. Hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children 12-16, and free for children under 12.

* The combined Heer Park/Meridale Park Civic Association will be hosting its annual yard sale fundraiser on Saturday, July 30. The sale, being held at the restored railroad depot on South Broadway, is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a great day to meet your neighbors while shopping for treasures.

Lindenhurst residents can support wounded servicemen and women by cheering them on at this year’s Town of Babylon Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride on July 22. 
The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization whose goal is to raise awareness of injured service members, as well as help them succeed. 
Soldier Ride is an initiative that provides rehabilitative bicycling opportunities for injured servicemen and women. 
The bike route takes riders from Babylon Town Hall, 200 E. Sunrise Hwy., in Lindenhurst throughout town’s communities, ending at Cedar Beach. A kick-off celebration will take place at Town Hall at 9 a.m.; the ride starts at 9:30 a.m.

Each summer, the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club holds its annual Steak Fry to raise scholarship money for Lindenhurst high school students. This year’s fundraiser will take place Aug. 11 from noon to 8 p.m. at Firemen’s Memorial Park. 
Hosted by Outback Steakhouse, the dinner consists of either a hamburger dinner for $7 per person or a steak or chicken dinner for $12 per person. Takeout is also available. There will also be a raffle of more than 100 prizes.

Music in the park: Attend one of the upcoming free concerts in the Lindenhurst summer concert series. Each of these concerts starts at 7:30 p.m. and is held at the Village Square. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy a night of music. 
Attend a musical: Studio Theatre presents "Beehive The 60s Musical” from July 9 to 30. The show traces the coming-of-age of women's music through 37 popular hits of the female groups and solo singers of the 1960s, including Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and The Supremes. Shows are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. 
Watch a movie: Stay cool with a movie at the Lindenhurst Memorial Library. Each Thursday, the library shows an afternoon movie starting at 1:30 p.m. The upcoming schedule includes “Unknown” on July 7, “Marilyn Hotchkiss: Ballroom Dancing and Charm School” on July 14 and “A Summer in Genoa” on July 21.

Saturday is the Lindenhurst Fire Department’s 51st Annual Long Island Invitational Parade &amp; Drill, marking the beginning of the volunteer fire department competition season. 
The parade kicks off the day’s events at 9:30 a.m., starting on South Wellwood Avenue at Liberty Avenue. The parade heads north on Wellwood Avenue to Hartford Street, from where it proceeds east on Hartford Street and ends at Firemen’s Memorial Park. 
The drill competition begins a half-hour after the parade ends. Taking place at the track at Firemen’s Memorial Park, the drill includes such team events as Three Man Ladder, Buckets and Motor Pump. 
More than 50 fire departments will participate, including the Lindenhurst Fire Department Snails Racing Team. 
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. There is plenty of grandstand-style seating on both sides of the track and food and refreshments will be available.

Walk for a Cure: On June 9, the Lindenhurst Middle School’s gifted and talented students will host a Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes, benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The walk will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Middle School track. Summer recreation program: The Village of Lindenhurst will be opening registration later this month for its 2011 summer recreation program at Kienle Little League Field at the Village Park. Registration is June 13 for village resident campers whose last names begin with M-Z; June 15 for village resident campers whose last names begin with A-L; and June 16 for all non-village resident campers as well as village residents looking to register late (based on availability). Around Lindenhurst: fire department parade, drill

As the weather heats up, one of my favorite ways to cool off is with an Italian ice or a scoop of my favorite ice cream. 
In Lindenhurst, Patsy’s and Son Italian Bakery is an institution known for its ices while ice cream shops in town have come and gone. Now there is a shop that serves both ices and ice cream --&nbsp; Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices &amp; Ice Cream. 
On a visit&nbsp; to Unicle Louie G's&nbsp; this past weekend, I tried the Wassup Watermelon&nbsp; Italian ice, and my husband tried the chocolate fudge brownie ice cream. Both were very tasty. The store opened for business on April 30 and has had a successful first week, one employee said.

 School budget vote. The 2011-2012 Lindenhurst Union Free School District budget vote is&nbsp; Tuesday, May 17, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The proposed budget represents a budget increase of 2.23 percent, which equates to a tax levy increase of 6.89 percent. Garden show. The Lindenhurst Mayor Beautification Society will be holding its second annual Garden Show on Sunday, May 15, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Village Square. Admission is free and includes gardening presentations. There will also be vendors selling garden-themed merchandise. 
EMS Day. National EMS Week is May 15 to 21, and in celebration, the Lindenhurst Fire Department will be holding an EMS Day on Sunday, May 15. This event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Fire Department Headquarters at 225 S.&nbsp; Wellwood Ave. The day’s activities will include free blood pressure tests for adults and children, demonstrations of emergency medical service equipment&nbsp; as well as games and giveaways for kids.

Around Lindenhurst: Uncle Louie G’s opens

Being a cancer survivor, I want to talk about an event close to my heart: The American Cancer Society 2011 Relay for Life of Lindenhurst. 
This year’s Relay for Life will take place on May 21 and 22 at Alleghany Avenue School (250 S. Alleghany Ave.). Each spring, members of the Lindenhurst community unite for this event, to celebrate the lives of people who have survived the battle against cancer, as well as remember those who lost the battle and give hope to people who are still fighting the disease. 
The Relay for Life is a 24-hour event, with teams camping out at the school's track and taking turns walking or running, because as the American Cancer Society states on its website, “cancer never sleeps.” The relay starts with a Survivors Lap, an inspirational lap done by cancer survivors celebrating their victory. 
After dark, there is a Luminaria Ceremony to honor those who have been touched by cancer and to remember those lost to the disease. In this ceremony, lighted candles are set in sand-filled bags, each with the name of a person affected by cancer. The luminarias line the track, and participants walk a lap in silence. The third tradition, the Fight Back Ceremony, is the time at the end of the event when participants pledge to take action and spread awareness of cancer research, treatment and prevention.

Around Lindenhurst: Relay for Life

The 21st&nbsp; Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce Spring Festival is scheduled for April 29 to May 1. Each spring, I look forward to this festival as it signals the end of the cold winter weather and the beginning of warmer, more care-free days. 
 
The festival starts Friday and continues Saturday with food, games and carnival rides. On Sunday, there will be a street fair with live music, crafts, retail goods and food. 
&nbsp;On Friday and Saturday, activities will be along Hoffman Avenue north of the Long Island Rail Road tracks from North Wellwood Avenue to North Fifth Street. 
&nbsp;On Sunday festival activities will be on Wellwood Avenue from West Gates Avenue to West John Street. 
There is no admission charge. Festival hours are Friday, 5 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. 
Other Lindenhurst happenings 
Easter egg hunt. The Lindenhurst Fire Department will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt for children ages 1 to 10 at 1 p.m. April 16 at Firemen’s Memorial Park on Heiling Boulevard. 
Mobile office. State Sen. Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. is holding mobile office hours at the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, 1 Lee Ave,&nbsp; from 1 to 3 p.m. April 14. Residents who need assistance with government services, have questions about government programs, or would like to express concerns about a particular issue can come and share them with Fuschillo in a one-on-one setting. No appointments or registration required. 
Music for a cause. The BaCCA Performing Arts Center will host Long Island Musicians for Japan Relief at 2 p.m. on April 17. This event will include an all-star lineup of Long Island musicians, including Cathy Kreger, Trio Angeline and Bob Westcott &amp; Sonny Meadows. All money raised will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross. The BaCCA Performing Arts Center is at 149 N. Wellwood Ave. 
Congratulations!&nbsp; The Lindenhurst High School history bowl team placed fifth overall in the Long Island Regional History Bowl held in March and qualified for the National History Bowl Championships, which takes place in Washington D.C. on Sunday, April 16. Good luck Lindy! 
Lindenhurst Football and Cheerleading League: Registration for the 2011 season will be held on April 13 and April 20, 7 to 8:30 p.m. each night, and on Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center, 293 Buffalo Ave.

Around Lindenhurst: Spring festival nears

Spring has finally arrived. And that means one thing -- baseball is back! 
Playing ball is one of life’s early lessons in teamwork. It takes all the players on the field to get a win, not just one person. It’s also a great way to meet new people and form friendships that can last for years. 
As we enter April, the two Lindenhurst Little Leagues -- Lindenhurst American Little League and Lindenhurst National Little League -- will start their seasons with opening day parades, which are followed by a day of festivities and the first games of the season. Both leagues’ parades will be April 10 -- Lindenhurst American’s parade starts at 10:15 a.m. and&nbsp; Lindenhurst National’s starts at 12:45 p.m. 
Who can forget the impressive season the Lindenhurst High School varsity baseball team had last year? Coming off a 26-1 season that ended with them as the 2010 New York State Class AA baseball champions, the Bulldogs head into the 2011 season looking to defend that title. The team kicks off the season with a three-game series&nbsp; with rival Connetquot, starting with a home game&nbsp; at 4:15 p.m. on April 4. 
For the big kids who don’t want to stop playing, there's the Lindenhurst Village men's 35-and-over slow pitch softball league. The league’s season starts the last weekend of April. If you are interested in playing, contact Bob Weiden for more information at 631-773-4206.

Around Lindenhurst: Let's play ball!

Like other Long Island downtown areas impacted by the recession, Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst has seen its share of stores close. A couple of establishments have opened successfully in the past few years, including The Village Lanterne, a German restaurant that opened in 2007, and Andrew Steven Salon, which opened in 2009. But they have been few and far between. That’s why it’s been nice to see a number of new businesses crop up. 
More recently, Mangia un Buon Piatto, an Italian restaurant at 183 S. Wellwood Ave., across from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, opened in early February; Top Bun of Lindenhurst, a casual hamburger eatery at 136 S. Wellwood Ave., next to CVS, opened at the end of December. Another Italian Restaurant, Villa Gaia, is expected to open soon on the northwest corner of Wellwood Avenue and Hoffman Avenue. 
Along with these new restaurants, a Subway is getting ready to open near Patsy’s Bakery, at 199 S. Wellwood Ave., and construction is under way next to Andrew Steven Salon, where a bridal salon will be located. 
One of the big issues facing the downtown area is the possibility of CVS moving from its location at 150 S. Wellwood Ave. to the northeast corner of Wellwood Avenue and Montauk Highway. The building at that corner, for years home to the Lindenhurst Movie Theater, would need to be knocked down. 
The Village Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the issue at 7 p.m. March 17 at Village Hall, 430 S. Wellwood Ave.

* The Bay Rats of the Lindenhurst Fire Department will hold its annual St. Patty's Day Party at the Firemen’s Park Pavilion on Heling Boulevard at 8 p.m March 12. * The Lindenhurst Public Schools board of education will hold budget workshops at 7 p.m. March 15 and March 23. The first meeting will be at the McKenna Administration Building, 350 Daniel St.; the second at Lindenhurst High School. The location of the March 23 meeting was changed recently to accommodate a larger crowd, a district spokeswoman said. 
* For all those chocolate lovers, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church will hold its annual Chocolate Festival from noon to 2 p.m. March 20, at 36 East John St. There will be a contest for the best chocolate dessert. Call 631-226-1274 for more information.
