Asharoken Village’s board of trustees has joined other elected officials and residents in official opposition to the United States Postal Service’s plan to relocate the Northport Post Office and its mail carriers.
The board unanimously passed a resolution at its Monday meeting urging lawmakers and local officials “to take all necessary steps to prevent its closure or relocation from its present location and to prevent the sale of the building.”
The day after Asharoken’s vote, Sen. Charles Schumer announced that Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe told him in a phone conversation last week that any decisions regarding the Northport post office have been put on hold, according to a statement from Schumer’s office.
