Asharoken officials have presented a tentative budget for next year that doesn’t pierce the state’s tax levy cap and would cost homeowners an additional $120 in taxes.

The village board of trustees held a public hearing for next year’s tentative budget, which is $2,026,775, about an 1.8 percent increase from this year.

The tentative budget also represents a 3 percent tax levy increase and 3.66 percent tax rate hike. The village’s state tax levy cap is 3.1 percent, said village clerk Nancy Rittenhouse.

Mayor Gregory Letica said the budget increase came primarily “from things that we have no control over.” Letica said police and state employee retirement pension contributions have risen $22,375, health insurance costs increased by $7,000, and workers’ compensation insurance by $4,000.

Next year’s budget has to be finalized by April 1, officials said. Asharoken’s budget runs from June 1 to May 31. Copies of the budget are available at the Village Hall and on the village’s website.

The village has received $364,784 in donations and has a $25,000 pledge toward the new village hall project, said Rittenhouse.
