Athlete of the week is Rocky Point's Dutton

The feat

Broke the record for career wins on Long Island with 223. Dutton earned the record when he defeated Edwin Perry of Riverhead in the Suffolk 140-pound final last Saturday. Dutton broke Jesse Jantzen's record of 222. Dutton won all three of his matches at the Suffolk meet.

"I always treat every match the same; it has become ritual after six years. The championship meet was different because I wrestled three matches in one day. I knew that the record was in reach and I took care of business."

Fundamentals

Dutton has been a varsity wrestler since he was in seventh grade and believes that mental focus is the most important skill to master. He finds his strength in the physical aspects of the sport and would like to improve upon his psychological approach.

What's next

Dutton will be wrestling at Lehigh University next year. For now, he focuses on competing in the state meet being held at the Times Union Center in Albany next weekend. He won the state title in the 135-pound weight class last year and hopes for a repeat at 140.
