Athlete of the week is St. John the Baptist's Jaycox
The feat
Jaycox scored 22 goals in a three-game week. She had a career-high nine goals against St. Mary's on April 14, eight goals against Carle Place three days later. then five goals against Holy Trinity. In the Cougars' second game against Holy Trinity on April 21, she netted another seven goals. With 48 goals in eight games, she is on the way to beating her 53-goal season last year.
The quote
"I owe everything to my coach, she is instrumental in my life and I want her to know how important she is," Jaycox said of coach Janine Pirone. "She has been my coach, my gym teacher, my health teacher and my friend and I look up to her in so many ways."
Fundamentals
Jaycox started playing lacrosse when she was in third grade and has been on varsity since she was in ninth grade. She finds her strength in her speed and would like to work on moving the goalie. She believes that the most important skill in lacrosse is communication.
What's next
Having lost to Mercy last year before the semifinals, Jaycox looks forward to meeting the Monarchs again and hopes to build the program since the Cougars are a young team. Long Island colleges are scouting her; although, since she is just a junior, she concentrates on this season and playing on the Long Island Wave this summer.
