The Smithtown Town Board today is set to name a local attorney to the town planning board.
Paul Damato would replace Carl Yellon, who resigned late last year, Councilman Thomas McCarthy said Monday. Damato’s appointment is expected to become official when the town board meets at 2 p.m. today at Town Hall, 99 W. Main St.

Damato would complete the last three years of Yellon’s five-year term, which is to expire on Dec. 31, 2015.

Yellon announced his retirement in a letter to town officials, McCarthy said, adding Yellon gave no other reason for resigning. Yellon could not be reached for comment.

McCarthy said Damato “seems very, very sharp,” adding he had submitted a resume and asked to be considered for the planning board vacancy. “He seems like he has the character and the knowledge to be able to fill that seat,” McCarthy said.

Damato could not be reached for comment.
