Aventura's adventure may end if leader goes solo

Lady Gaga's homestand this week is big, with four sold-out nights at Radio City Music Hall. But Aventura's homestand is bigger, with four sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden, starting Wednesday.

The Bronx-based bachata band had the biggest Latin album of 2009, spending nearly five months at No. 1 and spawning three No. 1 singles featuring its mix of the Dominican pop music with rock, R&B and reggaeton. "The Last," which included collaborations with Akon, Ludacris and Wyclef Jean, was so big it even debuted at No. 5 on the pop charts.

The band played the White House in the fall for President Barack Obama, who told the quartet, "You guys act like I don't know what bachata is," Aventura manager Johnny Marines told Billboard magazine.

However, Aventura's triumphant shows also may be bittersweet. "The Last" marks the band's final record of its contract and leader Romeo Santos has said he may tackle a solo project next that may take him further away from the classic bachata style.

Though the band plans to play throughout 2010, some are already wondering whether "The Last" tour may really be Aventura's last, leading to a fan frenzy some are describing as "Latin Beatlemania." Only time will tell whether Aventura will save "The Last" as its best.
