Aviation enthusiasts set to land in Babylon

A local model aviation group is hosting a free event this weekend at the Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve.

The Saturday event is an opportunity for people to learn about model aviation and also try their hand at flying a model airplane, according to the group, the Edgewood Flyers.

Hands-on flying will be featured using a buddy box trainer system, which allows the student’s transmitter to be connected by a cable to the teacher’s transmitter.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be an air show at noon and free food and drinks, as well as a raffle to win a model airplane.

The Edgewood Flyers was founded in 1973 to promote the educational and recreational benefits of aviation.

The preserve is a state-owned 850-acre nature site that spans the towns of Babylon, Huntington and Islip. Visitors attending the event are encouraged to enter off Commack Road and walk up to the field.
