Avila's HR in 11th stuns Red Sox
Alex Avila's two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Detroit Tigers a stunning 13-12 victory over Boston yesterday, leaving the Red Sox winless in three games under new manager Bobby Valentine.
The Tigers' Miguel Cabrera (five RBIs) tied the score at 10-10 with a three-run shot off Alfredo Aceves in the ninth. Boston scored twice in the 11th, but Mark Melancon (0-2) couldn't hold the lead.
After a sacrifice fly by Delmon Young, Cody Ross tried to make a leaping catch of Avila's drive to right, but the ball appeared to hit a restraining gate just above the wall before caroming onto the field. The play was not reviewed. Valentine said the umpires assured him that the ball clearly hit the railing above the fence.
The Red Sox lost for the first time when scoring at least 12 runs since a 22-13 loss to the White Sox on May 31, 1970, according to STATS LLC. The Red Sox and Yankees both are off to 0-3 starts -- the first time that's happened since 1966, according to STATS LLC.
Orioles 3, Twins 1: Jason Hammel took a no-hitter into the eighth in his Orioles debut. Despite allowing two walks, Hammel faced the minimum 21 batters through seven innings before Justin Morneau led off the top of the eighth with a double.
Rangers 5, White Sox 0: Matt Harrison pitched six scoreless innings and Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre and David Murphy homered for host Texas.
Indians 4, Blue Jays 3: Carlos Santana hit two home runs on his 26th birthday and Derek Lowe pitched seven strong innings for host Cleveland.
Royals 7, Angels 3: Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler homered and drove in three runs each for visiting Kansas City. Albert Pujols went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks and drove in his first run for the Angels with a groundout. -- AP
