Babylon targets neighborhood eyesores
In an attempt to clean up neighborhood eyesores, Babylon Town trustees last week approved a bill banning a long list of waste materials from outdoor private property.
The law is meant to prohibit excessive amounts of such things as lawn clippings as well as such refuse as furniture and dismantled or unregistered motor vehicles, calling them “a source of vexation and annoyance.”
Most forms of rubbish can’t be placed outside for any length of time at all. Exceptions are made for objects being loaded or unloaded, which can sit at the front property line for up to an hour, and for waste scheduled for pickup, which can be placed outside at 1 p.m. a day in advance.
The law authorizes inspectors who find refuse at the front property line to remove it and charge the cost of removal to the property owner.
