Babylon Town Board to pick new Sandy debris collector

Babylon’s Town Board is scheduled to vote today on whether to rescind a contract to haul construction and demolition debris resulting from superstorm Sandy that had been awarded to Progressive Waste Solutions, which does business on Long Island through its subsidiary Winters Brothers.
The contract would then be awarded to En-Con Industries, which already holds a long-term contract to collect residential garbage in the town.
Town spokesman Tim Ruggeri said in an email that “after the first day of service, the company decided they could not provide the service necessary for the price they had bid.”
Em-Con was the second-lowest bidder, he said. Details were not immediately available.
Babylon’s Town board is also scheduled to vote today on a $22,540,000 bond issue to finance reconstruction of town parks damaged by Sandy. Parks to be repaired include Venetian Shores Park, Tanner Park, Cedar Beach Golf Course, Overlook Beach Park, Cedar Beach Marina, Gilgo Beach Marina, Cedar Beach Park and Phelps Lane Pool.
