Babylon Town extends permit waivers again post-Sandy

Babylon Town will extend through Oct. 31 waivers for Sandy-related building, demolition and coastal erosion permits.
The waivers, which apply to residential and commercial properties, have already been extended twice.
With some town residents still waiting for insurance payments and a spurt of rebuilding expected in the fall, town supervisor Rich Schaffer said Tuesday further extensions are possible.
“We’ll do it for as long as we need,” he said. “We won’t be happy until the last person is back to where they were before Oct. 29, 2012,” the day the superstorm hit Long Island.
The town issued 172 Sandy-related building permits over the period Nov. 1, 2012 to July 31, 2013, of 1,020 total.
About 40 of those were demolitions.
The town has issued about 30 house-raising permits, but many more applications could be on the way; earlier this week, officials said more than 400 homeowners had expressed interest in raising their houses.
