Babylon Village tax cap override possible
Babylon Village trustees are likely to vote next month on authorization for a possible state tax cap override, village attorney Joel Sikowitz said.
A growing number of municipalities have given themselves the option to exceed the new state 2 percent tax levy cap when next year’s budgets are prepared. Amityville did so Monday night, and state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said earlier this month that 177 local governments statewide, or 22 percent, had passed laws to override the tax cap so far.
Babylon village officials had said earlier this month that a vote might have come at Tuesday night’s meeting but they are instead “waiting to see how the numbers play out for the new budget” to see whether an override is necessary, Sikowitz said.
A budget hearing is scheduled for April 2; the budget must be adopted by May 1.
