Badminton: Ionic Bonds Strengthen HHH
Half Hollow Hills East and West combine to become the Thunder Colts in badminton and the power in the name is displayed on the court.
Boasting an 11-0-1 season record, the girls are ready to claim the League I title. Since the athletes do not attend school together, they have gotten to know one another by planning bowling outings that even coach Lisa Albert attends when she is available. The bonding has proven successful, as their chemistry is obvious on the court.
The No. 1 doubles team, Jessica Chen and Jasmine Wasserman from match their team record with an 11-0 personal record and the No. 2 doubles team, Tanya Jain and Susan Zhang are not far behind, also leading League I. No. 1 singles Hannah Finger stands at 10-1and No. 2. Sara Cordano is 9-2.
HHH faced their strongest competition against Smithtown West on April 27. Attempting to blemish their perfect record, the Bulls charged ahead but were only able to salvage a tie. Jessica Chen and Jasmine Wasserman beat Alyssa Fauker and Olivia Wellinger, 15-2, 15-1, in first doubles to lead Half Hollow Hills to the finish a nine all.
The badminton team has become a family business, with success being passed through kin. Hannah Finger is a twin, and although sibling does not play, she has not taken on the sport of badminton alone; her cousin David Weiner plays first doubles with Chad Davis for the boys team. There are also two sets of siblings, Freshman Gina Augusta and junior Frank Augusta, and freshman Emma Cordano and senior Sara Cordano. Players who have graduated without playing beside a sibling pass on the tradition and encourage their family members to play.
Sophomore Hannah Finger is currently tied for first in the county with Heather Breiten from Patchogue/Medford. Debuting on the court last year, Finger was second in the county at No. 2 doubles. She is also a high honor roll student who greatly contributes to the team’s GPA. The boys and girls badminton teams have the highest GPA of any spring sport.
The Thunder Colts will roll in with the home court advantage in team championships being held on May 24 at Half Hollow Hills East.
