Bay Shore community joining to build playground today

The Great South Bay YMCA is hosting a volunteer event Friday to build a new playground at the Bay Shore facility.
An estimated 200 volunteers from the community, local politicians, the YMCA and the international bank BNP Paribas will come together to build a playground.
The Great South Bay YMCA was selected for the project because it serves Bay Shore, a community battered by superstorm Sandy last year.
“While our community sustained much damage during and after the storm, the Y was here to support all,” according to a release from the YMCA. “But the wear-and-tear has taken its toll. With more than 500 kids of all ages playing on our playground every day, it’s not surprising that as we mark our 20th anniversary, we are in need of an upgrade.”
The event is part of “Project ReBuild,” BNP Paribas’ philanthropic mission to build playgrounds in Sandy-affected areas with nonprofit KaBOOM!, which is dedicated to childhood activity and play. Some of the YMCA’s young members helped design the new playground with a creative drawing project this summer.
The event starts at 8:30 a.m. with a kickoff ceremony, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for 2:30 p.m.
