Bay Shore schools chief will make $229G

Peter Dion, a Michigan native with 38 years of public school experience, has been named the new Bay Shore school district superintendent. He’ll earn $229,000 this school year.

Dion, 60, started July 1 and said he has already begun meeting with community leaders and heads of local businesses.

With an undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and a master’s from Wayne State University, Dion said he is interested in increasing test scores in the district and providing a safe environment where students “learn to learn.”

Dion, whose business card is in English and Spanish, also said plans to embrace the diversity of the student population he serves. He and his wife are living in temporary housing in Hauppauge but plan to move into Bay Shore, where they have purchased a home.

“I want Bay Shore to continue to have the fine reputation it’s continued over the years,” Dion said. “I want Bay Shore to be a destination district for people looking for a great school.”

The public can meet Dion at a meet-and-greet on Sept. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m., in the Bay Shore High School Little Theater.
