Bayville properties damaged by storms can be assessed

Bayville residents and business owners whose properties were catastrophically impacted by Tropical Storm Irene or Tropical Storm Lee can now seek to have those properties reassessed on the 2011 roll — even though the damage occurred after the taxable status date, village officials said.

The village board of trustees on Monday night passed a resolution to provide the option to property owners in a unanimous 7-0 vote, Bayville deputy clerk/treasurer Christopher Vivona said earlier this week.

The village knows of no buildings that suffered significant enough damage to qualify for reassessment but passed the measure as a precaution, Vivona said.

The properties must have lost 50 percent or more of their value as a result of flooding to be considered under the state Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee Assessment Relief Act, he said.

The dateline to apply for relief is March 8, Vivona said.
