Incumbent Bellport Village Trustee James Vaughan and newcomer Ken Budny won election to the village board Tuesday night.

Vaughan was the only declared candidate in the election for two seats on the five-member trustee board. He received the most votes, Bellport officials said. Forty-four write-in candidates received at least one vote, and six of them got more than 10 votes.

Budny mounted a write-in campaign and finished with the second-most votes, officials said.

Budny is a longtime Bellport resident who grew up in the village, officials said, and is a member of the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society.

Will Veitch, the only declared candidate for the vacant mayoral post, also was elected.

Village workers finished tallying the votes at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
