Belmont Park keeps LIRR service

The Long Island Rail Road will continue its service to Belmont Park through the fall racing season, having extended its partnership with the New York Racing Association, officials said last Thursday.
The LIRR eliminated service to Belmont in 2010 as a cost-cutting measure but reinstated it in April after the association agreed to subsidize the cost of running trains to and from the racetrack. LIRR officials have said it costs about $112,000 a year to offer the service for the spring and fall race seasons.
Racing Association officials have said increased attendance at Belmont helps offset the cost.
The agreement with the association originally covered only the spring season, which lasted through July. But officials said Thursday the deal has been extended through the fall season, which ends Oct. 30.
A round-trip ticket to Belmont from Penn Station is $13 and entitles riders to a $1 discount off the regular $3 Belmont grandstand admission.
