Belmont Stakes events kick off in Elmont

The Elmont community will host five events this weekend and next week — including its first film festival — to correlate with the upcoming running of the June 9 Belmont Stakes.
Elmont’s Belmont Stakes Parade will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. in Belmont Park’s south parking lot and proceed down Hempstead Turnpike to the ATS Sports Complex, next door to the Elmont Public Library, on 700 Hempstead Tpke.
Immediately after the parade, there will be a family field day, organized by Gateway Youth Outreach, at the complex from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The key to Elmont will be presented to this year’s grand marshal, Norma DeBartolo. The event will consist of games, races, a bouncy house and face painting. Hamburgers and hot dogs will also be provided.
The Rotary Club’s Arts and Craft Fair will also run Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; about 60 vendors will sell a variety of items and food.
On Sunday, the Integrated Medical Foundation will present the Belmont Stakes Blue Ribbon 5K Run for Prostate Cancer. The race will begin at 7:15 p.m. and will end on the Belmont Park Racetrack finish line. Pre-race registration is $25 for adults and $15 for those under 16; same-day registration is $30. The Elmont Chamber of Commerce will host the Elmont Film Festival on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the library’s theater. The festival will feature Long Island International Film Expo award-winning films as well as local filmmakers who will take part in question-and-answer periods.
