Benefit to honor Navy SEAL, rescue dogs

U.S. Navy shows Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy, from Patchogue, N.Y. Murphy. Murphy who was killed while leading a reconnaissance mission deep behind enemy lines in Afghanistan will receive the nation's highest military award for valor _ the Medal of Honor, President Bush announced Thursday Oct. 11, 2007. He was killed June 27-28, 2005, while leading a four-man, special reconnaissance mission east of Asadabad in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan. The team was trying to find a key Taliban leader in the mountainous terrain when it came under fire, the Navy said. Murphy was shot when he crawled into the open trying to signal for help. A fundraiser with two goals — to build a memorial for the rescue dogs who worked at Ground Zero, and to commission a U.S. warship in honor of slain Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy of Patchogue — will be held in Port Jefferson Wednesday.
The organizers behind the Diamond in the Pines 9/11 Memorial Dog Memorial and the USS Michael Murphy Commissioning Committee are hosting the event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Ruvo Restaurant and Bar at 105 Wynn Lane. Tickets are $15 at the door, with happy hour drink specials and a buffet.
Tommy Sullivan of Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge will provide entertainment.
