Big Win Alert: Manhasset tops Garden City

Say, Manhasset, how you doin’?

Coming off Monday’s huge win over Farmingdale, it had to be wondered: How much momentum do they take from this? And how far does that momentum go?” The answer: far enough. The Indians capped their regular season on Wednesday with an impressive 13-9 win over rival Garden City – their first since 2009.

Julia Glynn scored five goals and Halle Majorana had three assists to lead Manhasset. Natalie Stefan, Charlotte Avallone and Linsey Ronbeck each added two goals, and Kelsey Quackenbush made 14 saves.

At 8-1, Manhasset finishes in a three-way tie with Garden City and Wantagh for first place in Conference II. The title will likely be determined by a statistical tiebreaker. Wantagh beat Manhasset; Garden City beat Wantagh; and now, Manhasset beat Garden City.

(Sources say the winner won’t be determined by a coin flip in a Dunkin’ Donuts, which I’m told did happen once back in the day.)

Alexandra Bruno had four goals and an assist for Garden City. Catherine McTiernan and Jenna Fuchs each scored twice, and Megan McDonald made seven saves.

What most stood out is that It wasn't so much that Garden City played poorly or underachieved, but Manhasset's execution was exceptional, particularly on defense in the first half. The Indians took control early, going ahead 3-0 before McTiernan's goal on a free position with 13:24 left in the first half. They were up 6-3 at halftime, and led 9-4 with 13:24 remaining. The Trojans did close to within 10-8 in the final minutes, but Manhasset scored some insurance goals to stave them off.
