After winning Class C from 2005 to 2010, Shoreham-Wading River might have expected a road block in last year's champs, Mount Sinai. Not sure if they were expecting a wall, though.

The teams' first meet up since SWR's return from Class B was all about the D - specifically, Mount Sinai goalie Julia Michaels. The sophmore made 15 saves as the Mustangs defeated SWR, 8-5. It was a statement game and "it was awesome," said coach Courtney Leonard.

"She kept us in the game," Leonard said of Michaels. "Shoreham did a great job of getting to the net...and getting free position shots."

Any big saves in particular? "Honestly, there were so many big ones that one doesn't stick out."

Michaels shored up a strong defensive effort, bolstered by Danielle Diaz, Carly Spano, Alex Fiobeck and Nikki O'Reilly. Danielle Della Rocca led the offense with three goals and one assist. The Mustangs led 5-2 at halftime and never trailed.
