In all the celebration over the death of Osama bin Laden and the comments of al-Qaida's diminished role ["The futility of al-Qaida," Editorial, May 3], overlooked is the key fact that, in his lifetime, bin Laden succeeded more than he could ever have expected in one stated goal: the ruin of the U.S. economy.
With the trillions of dollars we have spent on war since 9/11 (and not paid for), and the $2 billion a week we continue to spend, our debt has increased to monumental proportions.
No matter how significant or insignificant al-Qaida is in the future, bin Laden must have felt his goal was reached.

With the death Osama bin Laden we have an opportunity of grace to stop the circle of vengeance and bring the troops home. This is a time for peace. Let's do it.

My heart is swelling with pride to be an American! I am so proud and grateful to all of our military men and women who made such tremendous sacrifices to make this a reality.
However, I was brought back to a horrific time in our history. Unfortunately, now, my fear and anxiety also have been restored. We cannot revel in victory when bin Laden was only one small piece of a very large terrorist puzzle. An important chapter may have closed, but this, I dread, is not over.
Dana Pennetta, Huntington
I am so happy to see Republicans and Democrats agree on the president's decision to go get bin Laden. Now if only they would agree to solve the problems of this country and do what is best for America and the American people.
God Bless SEAL Team 6.

As an American and Air Force veteran it gives me more than overwhelming satisfaction knowing that the last thing this evil, poor excuse of a human being ever saw in his wretched life was a Navy SEAL, the American flag patch on his shoulder and the flash of his weapon.
