Blighted house demolished in Manorville

Brookhaven officials have demolished a blighted, semi-collapsed house in Manorville that had become a popular site for children to congregate.

The abandoned house, on South Street, was unsecured and in danger of collapsing, Brookhaven Councilman Daniel Panico said. Workers demolished the house on Friday.

Panico said the demolition will help protect area property values and, because it eliminates the possibility that the house could collapse while children were playing there, possibly saves a child’s life.

The house is owned by Maeva Development Corp. of Chicago, town officials said. The firm will be billed for the cost of the demolition, which is still being calculated, they said.

In addition to being unsafe, the building was an eyesore, Panico said. The interior was exposed due to the collapse of a wall.

The town used its Quality of Life Task Force to oversee the demolition and site cleanup, town officials said.
