People at the Commack Fire Department rolled up their sleeves and donated blood to honor a fallen hero.

The 7th annual Officer Glen Ciano Memorial Blood Drive was held Saturday at the Commack Fire House.

Ciano was on duty when he was fatally struck by a drunken driver back in 2009.

Ciano's widow and friends decided to hold the drive in his honor. They say this year's drive is timely, due to the needs of a critical blood shortage.

They say more than 2,000 pints of donations were canceled due to Thursday's snowstorm.

News 12 is told the drive's goal is to collect 250 pints of blood.
