Blue Jays end slump by shutting out Rays
Carlos Villanueva went six innings and Kelly Johnson had a two-run double off Matt Moore in the first inning last night as host Toronto beat Tampa Bay, 2-0. The Blue Jays had lost to the Rays five straight times.
The Rays have been shut out twice in three games, having lost to Texas, 1-0, on Tuesday. Tampa Bay has lost a major league-worst 10 times when allowing two or fewer runs.
Angels 5, Red Sox 2: Zack Greinke allowed five hits in seven innings to outduel Jon Lester and Albert Pujols doubled home two runs as host Los Angeles swept its season series with Boston for the first time. The Angels won all six games against the Red Sox in the past 10 days and extended their winning streak against Boston to eight. Boston had never been swept in a season series of at least six games in franchise history. James Loney went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Red Sox.
Athletics 12, Indians 7: Jarrod Parker pitched into the sixth and visiting Oakland hit four homers. The A's swept the four-game series and have won six straight.
Royals 2, Tigers 1: Jeremy Guthrie pitched into the eighth and Alex Gordon homered to lead host Kansas City. Prince Fielder had three hits for the Tigers.
Mariners 5, Twins 4: Blake Beavan (9-8) gave up two runs in seven innings and Trayvon Robinson drove in two runs for visiting Seattle.
Cubs 12, Brewers 11: Jonathan Lucroy hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs for Milwaukee, but Alfonso Soriano's RBI single capped a three-run rally in the ninth for host Chicago.
Nationals 8, Cardinals 1: Edwin Jackson (8-9) pitched eight strong innings and Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper led a 13-hit attack for host Washington with a home run apiece.
Giants 8, Astros 4: Hunter Pence's go-ahead two-run single in the seventh led visiting San Francisco to a three-game sweep.
Diamondbacks 2, Dodgers 0: Chris Young hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Ian Kennedy (12-11), who gave up two hits in 61/3 innings, beat Clayton Kershaw (12-8) for visiting Arizona.-- AP
