After getting complaints from the Bridgehampton Community House that taxicabs in its parking lot were making it hard for people using the building to load and unload their equipment — and simply to park — the Southampton Town Board has banned cabs from standing, parking, idling or even picking up fares on the site.

The Community House is on Montauk Highway and School Street, at the western entrance to the busy Bridgehampton business district, and it is rented out to local groups to hold special events or regular meetings.

And, because it is near a Hampton Jitney stop and a short walk from the Long Island Rail Road station, it is a common pickup point for cabs and for local residents who are meeting out-of-town guests.

The town board resolution that was approved 5-0 Tuesday night banned not only cabs, but limousines and all other vehicles for hire from using the Community House parking lot. After the measure was adopted, town officials said that if the restriction created too much of a problem for the cabs, they would look into creating some taxi-only parking on nearby streets.
