Bond for Point Lookout Fire Station updates rejected

Point Lookout and Lido Beach voters rejected a $6.5 million bond measure to build a new firehouse and make improvements to the Point Lookout Fire Station.

The 25-year bond measure failed 400-276 in Tuesday's vote for the Point Lookout-Lido Fire District.

District commissioners had planned to demolish the Lido Firehouse and add a second floor to the Point Lookout Fire Station. The Lido firehouse was built in 1957 and the Point Lookout station in 1968.

“We are disappointed in the results, as we feel that the proposal was a sensible plan that was developed after many meetings with the community,” fire district chairman Steven Weitz said in an email, adding that the proposal was drafted after multiple community meetings with much public input.

A similar $7 million bond measure failed last year when the district proposed a 23-year tax bond to demolish the 83-year-old Ye Olde Firehouse in Point Lookout. That firehouse is pending landmark status.
