"Eight Days: A Story of Haiti" by Edwidge Danticat (Scholastic, $16.99) tells the story of Junior, a 7-year-old boy trapped beneath his house after the Port-au-Prince earthquake in January. For ages 4 to 7. Scholastic will donate $10,000 in connection with the publication of the book to the International Rescue Committee, which provides aid to children in Haiti and other crisis areas worldwide.


"The Good Garden: How One Family Went From Hunger to Having Enough" by Katie Smith Milway (Kids Can Press, $18.95) is the tale of a Honduran girl named Maria Luz, who helps her family and community learn new farming methods, such as composting and creating terraces. For ages 7 and older.
