Boys soccer top performers

Here’s the weekly installment of top Long Island boys soccer performers for the period of Oct. 14 -20:

Christian Villalta, Central Islip

The sophomore scored a career-high four goals, all in the first-half, to lead Central Islip to a 4-0 win over Connetquot on Oct. 15. Two days later, he had two goals and one assist in a win against Lindenhurst.

Chris Monzon, Lawrence

Monzon had an assist on Francisco Quintanilla’s goal in Lawrence’s 2-0 win over Great Neck North that clinched the Conference A-2 title on Oct. 18, Monzon also scored in Lawrence’s 3-0 win over Lynbrook on Oct. 16.

Lucas Neroda, Wantagh

Neroda recorded his ninth shutout on the season this week, tied for third in the county. In a scoreless tie against South Side on Oct. 17, Neroda made four saves. He had five saves in a 4-0 win over Plainedge on Oct. 15.

Chris Rodrigues, North Babylon

He made eight saves in a shutout win against Smithtown East on Oct. 17, and had six saves in a shutout victory over Newfield two days prior.

Jimmy DeVita, Island Trees

DeVita layed sparingly in two games against Glen Cove and Lynbrook. DeVita, who fractured his ankle in a scrimmage against Cold Spring Harbor earlier this season, had sat out all but three games this season leading up to last week’s games. DeVita is now cancer free after bouts with monosomy, thyroid cancer and melanoma. DeVita was strong in the air, Island Trees boys soccer coach Ray Due said, but has been even stronger off it. “His presence has always been a sense of inspiration and motivation for our team,” Due said.

Cole Tobias, Half Hollow Hills West

Tobias had several key tackles and was a force in the air during a win against Hauppauge on Oct. 17 for the League IV title. “That team had great strikers, so clears were crucial and it was important not to let them break through,” Tobias said.
