Ron Eden almost left Brentwood for a college job 17 years ago. The boys soccer coach is glad he didn’t.

Eden picked up career win No. 250 in a 6-0 win over Patchogue-Medford today. Eden is 250-43-23 in his 17th season as head coach. He was an assistant with the Indians for 16 seasons before being a head coach.

Eden was an assistant under Ray Perez for 13 seasons. Eden was close to leaving for a college job before Perez died of a heart attack in 1995.

“I got really close to leaving Brentwood to go to college,” Eden said. “It didn’t work out that way. I am glad. This is where I want to be.”

Eden has guided Brentwood to two state championships, six Long Island championships, seven county titles and seven League I championships.

“This means I am old and I have some good kids,” Eden said. “I have been fortunate to be in a good program. I am happy to be where I am. A lot of people could be doing this. You have to be around a long time.”

Eden was doused by his players after the game and said it was extra special to do it at home. Brentwood has won four consecutive Suffolk Class AA championships and is a heavy favorite to win a fifth.

“We get great players,” Eden said. “They buy into the system. They don’t want to be the team that lets down. They have high goals. We have a lot of continuity. Usually, half the team is underclassmen. I give all the credit to the kids. You don’t win anything without them. I never thought I could get to this point. I never thought I would be here this long.”
