Volunteers participating in the Brentwood Clean Streets Project on May 7 picked up about 3 tons of garbage, organizers said.

“We’re really happy when the entire community can work together like this,” said Marcos Maldonado, who along with his cousin, Michael Ramos, heads the Clean Streets Committee. “These are the right types of things that get the community together.”

The cleanup, which brought together about 300 volunteers, was hosted by the Clean Streets Committee and the Town of Islip, he said.

Volunteers, some walking and other bused to problem areas, helped pick up trash within 10 square miles.

Last year, Maldonado’s group hosted events to paint over graffiti in Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore. He said this year, the group will focus on garbage removal and beautification.

The group plans to hold a cleanup in Central Islip later this year.
