Bridgehampton panel discussion on recycling
Cookies and garbage will be on the menu in Bridgehampton next week, as the League of Women Voters hosts a panel discussion on the status of recycling in the Hamptons.
East Hampton Town Councilwoman Sylvia Oberby, whose committees deal with sanitation and solid waste, said the board has been struggling for years trying to decide the best way to deal with scavenger waste — stemming from cesspools and septic systems — and is looking at selling its small scavenger waste plant.
While the plant needs upgrading and the town has two years to do it under an agreement with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, selling it could mean a private buyer would enlarge it to make it cost-effective. That, in turn, would mean bringing in septic wastes from other towns.
Other panelists will be Christine Fetten, Southampton’s director of municipal works, and Skip Norsic, whose family operates a sanitation service.
The League will provide refreshments and will show a documentary film on recycling.
The community meeting will be Monday at 7 p.m. in the Hampton Library on Main Street in Bridgehampton.
