Tim Duncan, 38, exercised the option on his contract for 2014-15 and will return to the San Antonio Spurs, a person with knowledge of the situation said. He will make about $10.3 million next season. This season, Duncan averaged 15.1 points and 9.7 rebounds. -- APKirilenko opts in with Nets
Andrei Kirilenko is coming back for another season with the Nets, electing to opt in to the second year of his contract, according to a league source. Kirilenko, 33, is scheduled to earn $3.3 million in the final year of his $6.5 million pact. He missed 37 games because of injuries in 2013-14 and averaged 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in 45 games. Canucks hire Desjardins
Willie Desjardins, 57, was hired as coach of the Vancouver Canucks. Desjardins succeeds former Rangers coach John Tortorella, who was fired after just one season.
Hasek heads Hall list
Dominik Hasek, Mike Modano, Peter Forsberg and Rob Blake, late coach Pat Burns and referee Bill McCreary were selected for the Hockey Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is set for Nov. 17 in Toronto.
Name change
The Phoenix Coyotes are about to become the Arizona Coyotes at the NHL draft on Friday. The franchise has used Phoenix in its name since 1996.
Flyers, Jackets swap wings
The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired winger R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round pick in the 2015 draft from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for winger Scott Hartnell.

Vanderbilt wins WS opener
Vanderbilt beat Virginia, 9-8, in Game 1 of the best-of-three college World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The Commodores scored all of their runs in the third inning, sending 11 men to the plate. Tyler Campbell had two doubles and three RBIs in the inning.-- AP
