EAST NORTHPORT
9/11 memorial being held Friday
Officials with the East Northport Fire Department are inviting the community to its 14th annual 9/11 Memorial Service on Friday.
The two-part event starts at 9:45 a.m., with a gathering around an 8-foot, 8,000-pound steel beam from Ground Zero that the department has on display year-round outside of its headquarters at 1 Ninth Ave.
An evening candlelight vigil starts at 8, also outside of the firehouse.
"Everybody handles 9/11 differently," East Northport Fire Chief Wayne Kaifler Jr. said. "Some people for the first couple years were affected by it, some people will be affected until the day they die. But however they're affected, we like to offer this service."
Kaifler was a New York City police officer and first responder at the World Trade Center who worked at Ground Zero.
"The firefighters in my department, they still take it to heart 14 years after the occurrence," he said. "It's very sentimental and we take the time to pay respects every year."
Firefighters will read the names of the nearly 3,000 victims aloud, and sirens will be sounded at the times of the collapse of each of the Twin Towers. The Marine Corps League will do a 21-gun salute and release doves.
Last year about 150 community members -- not including firefighters and their family -- attended the morning ceremony and 100 came to the vigil.
"A firefighter is a different breed," Kaifler said. "Every day, when a firefighter and EMS worker goes out to help the community, they put their lives on the line for someone else."
ISLIP
Town sponsors free fishing clinic
Summer may be winding down, but there's still time for outdoor activities with the Town of Islip's free fishing clinic today in conjunction with the state Department of Environmental Conservation's I Fish NY program.
The event is geared toward families and children. It is to be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the East Islip Marina on Bayview Avenue.
Participants can borrow fishing poles, and free bait will be provided.
Preregistration is required. Contact the town's Cultural Affairs Department at 631-224-5430 or the state I Fish NY program at 631-444-0283.
OYSTER BAY
Town 9/11 memorial is tonight at Tobay
The town will hold its 9/11 Memorial Ceremony tonight at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach.
The monument erected there in 2005 bears the names of approximately 100 residents or former residents killed during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and incorporates a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center.
There is a direct line of site from the monument, on the bayside of Tobay Beach, to where the Twin Towers once stood.
"The men and women whose names are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues," Town Supervisor John Venditto said in a statement. "They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here."
Tonight's ceremony will include a candlelight vigil, singing, bagpipe music and religious readings. The names of the lost will be read aloud.
LONG BEACH
Flood insurance discount available
City Council members said a federal program has increased a discount to 15 percent for homeowners with flood insurance.
The National Flood Insurance Program recognized Long Beach as one of five Long Island communities to receive incentives for resilient community floodplain management. Long Beach reduced flood loss, facilitated accurate insurance ratings and promoted awareness of flood insurance under The Federal Emergency Management Agency Community Rating System, officials said.
Residents previously received a 10 percent discount off flood premiums, City Council President Len Torres said. The additional 5 percent discount will be automatically applied to flood insurance annual bills and goes into effect May 1. No action is required by homeowners.
The City Council is seeking additional reductions on flood insurance, Councilman Anthony Eramo said.
BROOKHAVEN
Town conference, expo for women
The town will hold the Women Empowering Women Conference & Expo on Oct. 3.
It begins with a 9:45 a.m. question-and-answer panel featuring four successful women offering tips and other strategies on what it takes for women to succeed in the workplace, town officials said.
Attendees will later move on to a social media workshop that will focus on setting up and managing accounts, and how to maximize their reach and gain exposure for themselves professionally, officials said.
Women are asked to bring their smart devices and laptops to the event.
Women must register by Sept. 25.
The expo will be held at Brookhaven Town Hall, 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.
Brookhaven women will be charged $25 to attend, while others living outside the town must pay $35. Vendor space is also available for businesses to showcase their products.
