Brightwaters budget hearing tonight
The Brightwaters Village board of trustees is proposing a 2012-13 budget with no tax increase, saying it will end the current year with a surplus of $225,000.
The village will hold a public hearing on the budget proposal at Monday’s monthly board of trustees meeting.
The proposed spending plan is available on the village website.
While the village passed a local law giving itself the authority to override the 2 percent state tax cap, it doesn’t appear Brightwaters will have to do so, said village clerk-treasurer Christine O’Shea, though she added that two months remain in the fiscal year.
“It’s really not too much different from last year,” O’Shea said of the proposed budget. “It’s just a matter of moving numbers around. We’re not raising taxes, so everything is kind of the same.”
While O’Shea said the village isn’t planning to raise taxes, she added that individual property taxes have changed in the new budget because assessments have changed.
“It is anticipated that the village will end the current fiscal year projecting to add $225,000 in surplus,” Mayor Joseph McNulty wrote in a mayor’s message attached to the budget document. “As a result, taxes, consisting of property taxes and sanitation fees, will stay the same.”
Brightwaters’ fiscal year ends May 31. The public hearing is at 8 p.m. Monday in Village Hall, 40 Seneca Dr.
