Brookhaven officials issue warning about bogus home inspection notices

Brookhaven Town leaders are warning residents of a letter distributed on Friday from individuals posing as town workers to try to gain entrance to homes.

The bogus letter appeared to come from the town assessor's office and said employees would inspect their property Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon as part of "reassessments for the upcoming tax year."

"No such reassessment or inspection is taking place in Brookhaven Town," Supervisor Edward P. Romaine said in a statement. "Whoever sent this fraudulent letter out will be prosecuted to the fullest extent to the law."

He added that any town employee conducting business will have proper identification and travel in a town vehicle.

Suffolk County Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney have been notified.

Romaine suspects the letter is part of an illegal scam from individuals posing as town workers to gain entrance into homes. Anyone who received a copy of the letter is asked to call 451-TOWN.
