Brookhaven punts on move to sell properties
Brookhaven Town tabled a proposal at its board meeting Tuesday night to hire a real estate agent to examine the potential sale of surplus properties owned by the town.
Earlier at the meeting, the measure had failed 4 to 3, when Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld, a Democrat, changed his vote to an abstention, which would have effectively killed the plan. Councilwoman Connie Kepert, a Democrat, asked opponents why they voted against the measure, and no one answered.

The initial failure of the proposal infuriated Supervisor Mark Lesko, who said the board took a potentially big revenue generator for the cash-strapped town off the table.
“Taxpayer beware,” he said, and then railed against opponents, charging that they were being fiscally irresponsible.
The board decided later in the meeting to table the proposal.

Proclamations:
The town board acknowledged the work of Operation Veronica, a group that collects Christmas cards for military troops overseas. Representatives Milly Feliciano and Janet Godfried were on hand to accept a certificate.
The board also honored the Bellport High School and William Floyd High School football teams.
The Bellport team -- it looked like they all showed up -- won the Long Island Class II title, earning its sixth L.I. title and tying North Babylon for the most since the event began in 1992.
The William Floyd team won the Suffolk County Division I Championship.
